Summer in Egypt means many things, from the beach to late night parties. But of these, seasonal fruits may just be at the top of our list. One particularly guilty pleasure is the infamous teen shouky, otherwise known as prickly pears. Yes, that’s their actual name, Google it like we did.

These odd, scary-looking fruits make an appearance every summer, and we’ve all been known to get through a kilo of them and then regret it later. But have you ever stopped to wonder where these prickly little fruits come from? One photographer did; Moustafa Elshemy took it upon himself to head to Abu Gharib Road in Alexandria and has graced us with a gorgeous shoot documenting the harvest of prickly pears in Egypt.
