The Guardian Names Egyptian Film 'Clash' One of 2017's Most Exciting Dramas

Featured in Festival de Cannes' Un Certain Regard, nominated for a Golden Globes, and scooping three awards in Spain’s Valladolid Film Festival, Mohamed Diab’s cinematic masterpiece Clash (Eshtebak), has just racked up another accolade, making The Guardian’s ‘Most Exciting Film Dramas of 2017’ list.

Described by the publication as, “a brilliant docudrama,” Clash showcases the story of Egypt’s struggle with oppression and the red-blooded road to democracy in a place where many different factions compromise unity. The entire film is set in an eight-metre police van containing a mix of journalists and protesters with different beliefs ‘clashing’ over the downfall of Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Following its release, the film was under threat of removal from theatres due to the country’s conservative censorship bureau.

The Guardian’s list also features Kate Winslet’s ‘The Mountain Between Us’ and Chris Evan’s ‘Gifted'.
