Egyptian Government Launches New Programme to Support 45 Waste Management Startups

Startups working in waste management can now apply for the government's new programme Leha Eema to get financial support and mentoring.

Egypt's Ministry of Trade and Industry announced  the launch of its national 7-month programme Leha Eema, supporting and financing 45 startups working in the field of waste management from all around the country. The programme will focus on bolstering networking and exchange of expertise and benefits between said startups, investors, and service providers, with its main goal being to utilise and manage the staggering amount of waste Egypt produces annually. The deadline for startups to apply is the 12th of April, with an information session scheduled next Monday at Injaz's headquarters in Maadi, according to a recent press release by the ministry's National Cleaner Production Centre.

In order to encourage startups operating from outside Cairo to apply and take advantage of the programme, all transportation and accommodation fees to the capital - for non-Cairo-based startups - will be covered under the programme for the whole duration.

"We consider waste to be a wasted resource. Annually, we produce almost 10 million tonnes of industrial waste alone. For each 10K tonnes of waste, 25 direct jobs are created," says National Cleaner Production Centre Director Aly Abou Senna.
