Al Jazeera Three Win Prestigious Award

After having been imprisoned for over a year by Egyptian authorities on charges of terrorism and spreading false news, the UK's highly commended Royal Television Society has presented its Judges' Award, celebrating the exchange of thoughts and debate, to Al Jazeera's reporters Peter Greste, Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy, in recognition of “the three 'brothers' who conducted themselves with enormous dignity and courage in the face of continues uncertainty about their fate.”

Having been released earlier this month, Peter Greste accepted the award on behalf of all three and thanked all of his fellow news professionals for their uninterrupted support by saying: “I'd be willing to bet this award that journalists have never united around a single common cause in the way that they have ours.”

While the struggle continues for Mohamed and Fahmy and their strict bail conditions, pending re-trial prevented them from taking their seats at the ceremony. Greste expressed the importance of the award and their united struggle for a cause he describes as being “about the universal principles of freedom of expression, about the public's right to know. And we knew you were right there with us.”
