Egypt is setting out to build the country’s first monorail train to connect residential neighbourhoods in Cairo, Giza and October 6th City, the Ministry of Housing announced on Saturday. With an investment of $1.5 billion, the project will be implemented by an Egyptian-Canadian consortium in an effort to boost transport efficiency in Egypt’s most populated districts.

Set to begin construction in January 2016, the monorail is scheduled to be operational in 2018, with a 30-month estimated timeline. The project will involve a coalition integrated by Bombardier Transportation Canada Incorporated, and Egyptian companies Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction Industries.

The hanging monorail is planned to include 17 stations grouped into two phases, including two stations in Sheikh Zayed City, a district in 6 of October City and situated about 15 km from Lebanon Square, in Mohandiseen.

Bombardier, which had met with Egypt government officials in early 2014, has implemented several similar projects in 18 countries including the US, Spain, Germany, Canada, and Saudi Arabia, Minister of Housing Mostafa Madboly announced.
