EGP 1000 Fine for Wasting Water in Luxor

Luxor Governor Mohamed Badr has announced a EGP 1000 fine for wasting potable water on purposes other than drinking, reports Daily News Egypt.

This comes after Luxor's Water and Sewage company released a statement asking residents to exercise water conservation this holiday season, adding that the company will be operating at full capacity to meet the municipality's water needs during Eid Al Adha.

This comes amid uncertainty over Egypt's water security following months of speculation and controversy surrounding Ethiopia's construction of the Renaissance Dam.

Earlier this year, however, the country's Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel Aaty had said that the nation is suffering from water shortage but not as a result of the construction of Ethiopia's Renaissance Dam, which is currently underway, chalking it up to Egypt's ever-growing population, instead.
