Egypt to Attend the 2016 G20 Summit as Guest of Honour

Egypt has been invited, as one of two state guests of honour, to attend the 11th edition of the G20 summit hosted in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Egypt’s attendance has been confirmed as Egyptian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid stated that an Egyptian delegation will be participating in the event which is due to be held on September 4th and 5th. The theme to be at the heart of the summit’s discussions is "building an innovative, invigorated, interconnected and inclusive world economy," as revealed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in a speech he gave during the 10th G20 summit in the Turkish city of Antalya.

The invitation was extended last week by Jinping during his visit to Egypt, according to Abu Zeid. G20 bylaws allow host states to invite up to two guest states.

"Ambassador Magdy Rady, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for International Economic Relations and International Cooperation and Minister Plenipotentiary Rajy al Etreby will represent the Egyptian presidency during the summit,” Abu Zeid said, according to the Cairo Post.

The G20, which comprises the nineteen largest economies of the world plus the European Union, is an international economic forum founded in 1999. G20 leaders meet annually while Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meet regularly throughout the year.
