The tragedy that is ISIS and the innocent lives they take is unfortunately old news, though every day new information reveals the gravity of the situation. After releasing horrific a guide of how ISIS fighters should treat their female captives, it is becoming increasingly apparent how terrible the lives of these kidnapped women are as Amnesty International has revealed that many are attempting and/or committing suicide. “Many of those held as sexual slaves are children -- girls aged 14, 15 or even younger,” Donatella Rovera, Amnesty’s senior crisis response adviser, said in a statement, adding that not only are ISIS recruits perpetrating these crimes, but also their followers.

One 19-year old girl named Jilan was just one of the victims, having slit her wrists and hung herself in a bathroom after she was asked by her kidnapper to shower and change into a belly dancing costume. Fearing rape, she took her life, as explained to Amnesty by a fellow captive who managed to escape: "She was very beautiful; I think she knew she was going to be taken away by a man and that is why she killed herself.”

Two sisters who also managed to escape explained to Amnesty International that they were stopped in the act. “We tied... scarves around our necks and pulled away from each other as hard as we could, until I fainted... I could not speak for several days after that,” Wafa, 27, told the rights group.
