Two members of Egypt's tourism and antiquities police force were killed Wednesday in an archaeological area near the Giza Pyramids, as unknown gunmen fired at them from a motorcycle. In a rare attack on a tourist site, the assailants fired a barrage of bullets on a road near the pyramids and fled the scene, leaving one conscript injured as well. The suspects are now being searched by security forces. Director of Giza investigations Mohamed Farouk gave orders to cordon off the area and comb the adjacent desert in search for the suspects, Aswat Masriya reported.

According to security sources, the attack took place about 30 metres from a security checkpoint leading to the tourist site, on the western outskirts of Cairo. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but bombings and shootings perpetrated by Islamist militants against security forces have surged in the past months, ever since former president Mohamed Morsi was ousted in July 2013.
