Will You Be Moving to Liberland?

With optional taxes, no military and an air of exclusivity, applications for citizenship in the tiny new country that'll border Croatia and Serbia are flying in.

If you haven’t heard of this yet we wouldn’t necessarily be surprised but there is apparently a new country being formed. The country is set to reside in between the borders of Croatia and Serbia on the west bank of the Danube River. Despite the country's total area being only 7km2 it's actually quite a bit larger than the Vatican City.

Anyway, the idea of what shall be deemed the Free Republic of Liberland was claimed a country by Vít Jedlička, a former Czech politician who also just happened to also declare himself the first president of Liberland.

The land where it's being founded was declared no-man’s land and that is when Mr. Jedlička took advantage of the situation and woke up one morning telling himself “Hey, I’ll found a country today.”

So by now you’re probably wondering “How do I become a citizen?” as we wouldn’t really blame you for wanting to leave Egypt for a bit… or forever. Well you have to visit the website http://liberland.org/ and register. With the country currently only accepting 3,000-4,000 applications you can say competition is fierce for a spot in the upcoming country.

Apart from the application the website has posted some “requirements” for being a citizen. Those requirements are as follows:

- Have respect for other people and respect the opinions of others, regardless of their race, ethnicity, orientation, or religion

- Have respect for private ownership which is untouchable

- Do not have communist, Nazi or other extremist past

- Were not punished for past criminal offences

Sounds simple enough; basically just be a good, non-judgmental person and your chances should increase. With the form of government being a constitutional republic with elements of direct democracy, and the country apparently having no military, as well as giving the citizens the option to pay taxes, this kind of sounds too good to be true.
