Al-Watan Daily reports that at an institute for people with physical disabilities in the city of Beni Suef, a Christian woman named Najla Talat Ghali has translated the Qur’an into American Sign Language.

The Holy book has been translated into more than 40 languages in its history, but this is the first time it will be available in a non-verbal form of communication.

“My job is translation and in this institute I translate everything happening for the hearing-impaired,” Ghali said. She added that the hearing-impaired have a right to read and understand the meanings of the Qur’an.

First, however, Ghali had to make sure her work was permissible according to Islamic rules. “I asked some Muslim scholars and they told me there is no problem,” she said.
