Alexandria’s Greco-Roman Museum Has Reopened to the Public

The Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria has reopened its doors after a restoration that took almost two decades to complete.

Considered to be one of the most significant museums in the Mediterranean, the Greco-Roman Museum is the latest attraction to be added to Egypt's wealth of tourist destinations. After being closed in 2005, the restoration project worked to preserve its classic Roman facade, adding new sections while updating the lighting, ventilation, display and security systems.

Across 30 galleries, artefacts discovered in archaeological sites in Alexandria are displayed in chronological order, uncovering the history of ancient Alexandria, starting before the time of Alexander the Great.

Relics from the ancient world, including 10,000 artefacts, showcase ancient Greek, Roman and Ptolemaic civilisations, as well as Byzantine and Coptic arts and architecture, alongside ancient Egyptian craftsmanship and commerce.
