Education, education, education.

Aswan is much more than Nubian culture and picturesque scenes of the Nile. The historic city has also been named one of the top 10 winners of the 2019 UNESCO Learning City Award, which is given to cities that effectively use resources to promote and implement lifelong learning and quality education locally.

Aswan has been developing a number of projects including gardening and water-conservation programmes in schools, as well as entrepreneurial training opportunities. Other winners include China’s Chengdu, Malaysia's Petaling Jaya, China’s, Greece's Heraklion, Nigeria's Ibadan, Ukraine's Melitopol, Mexico's Santiago, South Korea's Seodaemun-gu, and Denmark's Sonderborg.

The award, which was established in 2015 and is given every two years, will be presented at the 2019 International Conference on Learning Cities in Medellin, Colombia, also one of the cities that won.
