Last week, the Coptic monks of Deir al-Sultan were beaten by Israeli police at Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The Monks were staging a peaceful protest in a sit-down against the Israeli-led restoration which allegedly favors Ethiopian monks living in the monastery.

This sparked outrage among the Coptic community and allies. In light of the event, The American Coptic Association held a demonstration in front of the Israeli consulate in New York yesterday speak out against the actions of the Israeli police.

The Association is to continue the demonstrations until Deir al-Sultan is handed over to the Coptic Orthodox Church, coming from the Supreme Court of Israel’s verdict which validates their claim.

Last Sunday the court turned down a request made by the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem to implement necessary renovations inside Deir al-Sultan. This request was made on the basis of it being an archaeological site, which requires it to be renovated under the supervision of the Israeli antiquities authority.

According to Coptic lawyer Hany Sabry, Israeli forces stormed Deir al-Sultan, owned by the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church, and assaulted the monks publicly without any international organizations taking action against the attack. Sabry then called on Egypt to make the case of international importance until justice is served.
