Egypt Plans to Raise the Minimum Wage From EGP 1,200 to 2,000 in The Private Sector

This is an over 60 percent increase from the current minimum wage.

In an interview with Extra News channel on Saturday, Egypt's Minister of Manpower Mohamed Sa'fan revealed that the government plans to enforce a minimum-wage of EGP 2,000 per month on the private sector, Shorouk News reports.

The current minimum wage in Egypt stands at EGP 1,200, which is not mandatory in the private sector. "We're planning to train the youth in order to prepare them for the available vacancies in the private sector," Sa'fan explains, adding that Egyptian youth are generally not attracted to private sector jobs. Sa'fan didn't specify the timeline or mechanism for applying the minimum wage, according to Enterprise

The step will entail raising the minimum wage by 65 percent from where it currently stands, which is EGP 1,200 for both the public and private sectors.
