Egypt Will No Longer Import Gas After Achieving Self-Sufficiency

Egypt's Petroleum Minister, Tarek Al-Mulla, announced that Egypt will no longer be importing liquefied gas, with the last shipment of imports arriving the previous week, according to Egypt Today.

In its effort to achieve self-sufficiency, Egypt’s daily production of the gas field increased from 350 million cubic feet to two billion. The daily production of gas went up to 6.6 billion cubic meters this month, which is an increase of 600 million since July 2017.

Italian energy company Eni recently discovered a gas well in the Western Desert, recorded to be 17,000 meter deep. Meanwhile explorations are ongoing in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

64 billion cubic meters have been provided to Egypt for liquefaction by Israel’s Tamar and Leviathan natural gas reservoirs as Egypt continues to work towards becoming a regional energy hub. Made with Egyptian company Dolphinus, the deal’s estimated value is USD 15 billion.
