Egyptian Swimmer Farida Osman Wins Best Athlete In Africa

Osman was recognised at the annual Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) Awards.

Farida Hisham Osman, Egypt’s premier professional swimmer, was recognised for her achievements in sports as the best African female athlete at the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) Awards on Thursday.

The ANOC Awards were presented during a chic, festive ceremony in Prague, Czechia to recognise the best male and female athletes from five continents.

The 2017 edition of the awards took place during the 22nd ANOC General Assembly which was held between November 2 and 3, and was attended by over 1,000 senior delegates from the Olympic Movement.

The delegates included representatives from all 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), international federations, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), among others.

The male African winner of the award was Chad Le Clos, who’s also a swimmer, from South Africa. The winner of the Asian male award was Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim, who plays athletics.

Other special awards presented at the event were Outstanding Performance, Outstanding Lifetime Achievement and Contribution to the Olympic Movement Awards 2017.

ANOC was founded in 1979 in San Juan, Puerto Rico under its first President Mario Vázquez Raña, from Mexico, who led the organisation for nearly 33 years. He was succeeded by Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, a member of the Kuwaiti royal family, in April 2012.

In 2014, Al-Sabah established the ANOC Award, which was first held that year in Bangkok, Thailand. The annual event was created to recognise the achievements of the NOCs and their athletes, and the winners are decided by the ANOC jury. That body is given a shortlist of candidates by each of the continental associations.
