Hurghada Heats Up

A power outage followed by an electrical surge sparks fires across Hurghada...

Hurghada Heats Up

In another display of the inefficiency of Egypt's electrical network, a massive power outage hit Hurghada last night, leaving the whole seaside town in the dark. When electricity returned, the voltage was too high, sparking tens of electrical fires across the city, including nine residential buildings, several offices and a school, as well as causing damage to appliances in hotels, homes and even the airport. This isn't the first time Hurghada has been in the news in recent weeks; the opening of a segregated, alcohol-free hotel and the arrest of tourists, accused of producing porn, have shown that previously-unaffected touristic destinations in Egypt are falling prey to the country's politics.
