Tanta University Bans WhatsApp on Campus

Following a bizarre decision by Alexandria University to ban ripped jeans on campus last month, the dean of Tanta University's Faculty of Medicine, Dr Amgad Abdel Raouf, decided on Wednesday to ban the use of WhatsApp and other social media platforms for circulating or spreading any information or pictures from the university's campus, Al Masry Al Youm reports.

"A complete ban on using any social media application or website on the premises of the faculty, even if they're on private [WhatsApp] groups," reads the decision, which has been printed and distributed on the faculty's walls. "Taking photographs inside the faculty is also permanently banned, unless permitted by the dean."

It remains unclear how the university's administration plans on enforcing the controversial decision.
