The NYU Stern Urbanisation Project has created this video which charts the dramatic turning points in Cairo's urbanisation process, and the various lulls and booms that the City Victorious experiences over 200 years of its modern history, from 1800 to 2000.
It's a little slow to start, but once it escalates it gets dramatic. You can check it out here:
It's also very interesting to chart the different phases of growth in conjunction with Egypt's political history, and the projects that were going on at the time.
Moreover, the sheer difference between the starting point and end point of the video is remarkable, in particular considering the fact that it ends in 2000, and that Cairo is currently witnessing a major period of urban expansion.
