Alexandria's Hotel Occupancy Reaches Record 98% During Christmas Season

The hike is expected to continue well into to next week.

Amid Christmas and New Year's celebrations, Alexandria's hotel occupancy reached a record of 98%, according to the Head of Alexandria's Tourism Chamber, Ali El Menestarely.

The northern port city, whose combined hotel rooms number at 4,200, was almost fully occupied during late December, with El Menestarely, speaking to Egypt Today, further adding that this includes hotels in the adjacent Borg Al Arab City. The increase is expected hike is expected to continue well through till Coptic Christmas on January 7th.

It was also revealed that the city's hospitality capacity is set to increase by the end of 2019, when planned new tourism facilities are completed.

This goes in line with the general increase in tourism coming into Egypt throughout 2018, which ended by Egypt being named as the world's fastest growing tourism destination by the UN World Tourism Organisation

The year witnessed saw Egypt welcome some 8.5 million international tourists, the highest since 2010, when 14.2 million tourists visited the country, with the numbers set to go even higher in 2019.
