Having opened its doors just a few short weeks ago, the Basuna Mosque in the Upper Egyptian city of Sohag has been chosen among 27 mosques by the Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture (AFAMA).

Based in Saudi Arabia and now in its third cycle, AFAMA aims to not only celebrate the architecture of mosques from around the world, but to act as a database and open debate on the urban and technical aspects of mosques.

The mosque was designed by Cairo-based architecture firm, Dar Arafa Architecture, and is in the running with others from around the globe in places as far and wide as Russia, Mali, Uzbekistan and Thailand.
