'Mémoires of Inji' is a showcase the fifth consecutive annual exhibition for the pioneering woman artist and activist Inji Efflatoun, a shining example of the very best of modernEgyptian art. The unique lens through which Inji creates her illustrations are framed within the socio-political prism of women’s rights and Marxist progressive activism in post-1940’s Egypt, movements which she was at the vanguard of.
Efflatoun explored themes that were distant from her sheltered upbringing: poverty, imprisonment, woman’s rights, political activism and the ceaseless labor of Egypt’s peasants. This year’s special collection is exhibited with the concept of showcasing the remnants of Inji’s visual memoirs, the most compelling examples of which were handpicked by SafarKhan to give athematic and chronological retelling of Efflatoun’s exceptionally eventful and inspirational life story.
