Student DJ Launch Party Set for Eid

Summer is sadly coming to an end, and it’s time to start looking to the future. Everyone wants to know what music we’ll be fist-pumping to through the next year. Enter Electrum Records -- the region's most exciting DJ competition is back. That’s right; we’re gearing up for the 3rd iteration of Student DJ, and this year’s promises to be bigger than ever.

“Immediately after year one, we knew we had something special, but nothing prepared us for this” Electrum co-founder Ahmed Fahmy explains to us.

20 of Egypt’s most exciting up-and-coming DJs will be selected for a 7 day boot camp in the beautiful backdrop of Gouna. There, they will learn the tricks of the trade from some of the country’s most technically gifted spinners, as well as Welsh DJ Jamie Griffiths who has 20 years in the industry behind him making the rounds at the likes of Fabric, Ministry of Sound, Kinetic and Creamfields. They will also get the opportunity to get a feel of the innovative new Electronic performance equipment, The Reactable, which will be used throughout the competition.

But just because we’re looking to the future, that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun right now. To celebrate  the end of one of the most memorable exciting summers for Cairo’s nightlife ever, Electrum Records will be bringing us the swan song of 2014, with one of the biggest, if not THE biggest party of the year. This is Keep Moving on October 4 during Eid at Mangroovy Beach, where the 20 DJs who have been selected will be announced.

“The talents I’ve seen this year are more sophisticated, with amazing performance and production skill to get us started,” says Fahmy. “The sheer numbers that applied have surprised us and enabled us to have a wide range of choice from the amazing untapped talents that Egypt has to offer.”

Last year’s winners of the most prestigious DJing prize in Egypt, Aguizi & Fahim will be taking to the stage showcasing their out-of-the-box House selections that won them last year’s grand prize. Serving up a delicious platter of Tech House, Deep House, and Nu-Disco, these former winners will be there to school this year’s crop of competitors in how to do it.

Also, one of London’s top up-and-coming female DJs, Jasmin, will be taking to the stage to play her 90s Chicago, and contemporary Deep House inspired set, showing off the fact that the girls are just as good as the guys. The femme fatale has been flying the mast for the fairer sex behind the decks, hosting and running her own nightclub ‘Housewife London’ back in the UK, which curates the best selection of House music by the top female DJs in the underground dance music scene, perfectly in line with Student DJs mission to unearth and inspire a new generation of female DJs in Egypt.

If that wasn’t enough, two of Europe’s hottest House music acts will also be there to keep the party going.  Romanian duo NTFO - think dark, eclectic, sexy old-school House - and the deep, ethereal and rhythmic Dutchman Karmon, will be headlining.

Set on the coast of Gouna in Mangroovy, with gleaming white sands, flawless sapphire blue oceans and the last rays of Summer shining a spotlight on a wave of new musical talent, it’s the perfect setting to look upon the shores of Egypt’s future nightlife scene and party on from morning through to night.
