14 Stunning Photos of Cairo's Abandoned Cars by Legendary Celebrity Photographer Steve Double

Anyone who has been to Cairo can tell you that it is one of the most crowded cities in the world. It so happens that more than half of Egypt’s population resides in Cairo and so one can only imagine just how many cars try to get to and from work during peak hour. But have you ever noticed that many cars around Cairo are operating on their last legs? As in they have a run down body, missing lights or mirrors, and they make lethal noise until the owner eventually dumps the machine somewhere around town as if it were a lifelong burden.

But then Steve Double comes along – with his 25 years of photography experience - and finds the irreparable beauties that is the rusty ruins of these tin machines as if the vehicles were letting go of their lifelong encumbrance. “We invest so much into these metallic totems to power, prestige, status, and mobility that when they become devoid of their power (petrochemical or societal), that’s when they begin to become of interest to me,” says Double. “As they begin to rust and rot back to the earth they came from, they begin to emit a curious beauty”.

Double is probably the world's luckiest photographer having the opportunity to capture celebrity portraits of people like Eminem, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Nirvana, and even Michael Jackson. However it is disrespectful to attribute Double's hard work and talent to luck; one merely needs to look at the raw emotion and intimate moments that he is able to snap while the celebrities are in the prime of their performances.  Double’s Ghost Cars of Cairo Photography Exhibition is now showing at Arcade Gallery in Maadi with a private opening on May the 2nd, and will run until May 31st, 11am-9pm daily (Fridays by appointment only).

We leave you with 14 ghost cars captured in raw by Steve Double from around Cairo; a little teaser to what you can expect at the exhibition.
