Copper Dome with Sacred Stones Registered in Sultan Qaitbay Collection
Bearing precious stones and the footprints of Prophet Muhammed, Sultan Qaitbay's copper dome was recently added to the antiquities registry.
Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Qaitbey in Old Cairo has a special antiquity that was only just registered to the Sultan Qaitbay collection: a copper dome bearing the footprints of Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, on the columns beneath it.
The copper dome also features sacred stones on its body, which were brought to Egypt by a merchant named Shams al-Din ibn Al-Zaman before Sultan Qaitbay purchased them for his personal mausoleum.
The dome is one of 2,537 artefacts recently registered into the Islamic, Coptic, and Jewish Antiquities Council, including the domes of Al-Atris and Al-Aidarous at the Sayyida Zeinab Mosque.
