Right on the heels of India by the Nile, the Indian embassy in Cairo is organising its second annual Tagore Festival, in commemoration of renowned Indian poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s 156th birth anniversary.

The festival is set to take off on Monday May 8th and runs for 5 days until May 12th. The events will not be limited to Cairo, with one dance performance taking place at Sayed Darwish Theatre in Alexandria at 8 PM. As for Cairo, on Monday the festival will kick off with a screening of a film based on Tagore's life at Hanager Cinema in Cairo Opera House at 7 PM. Thursday will see the Dancers' Guild perform the Chitrangada dance at the Arab Music Institute in Downtown Cairo at 8 PM and finally Friday will conclude with the Indian community performing Rituranga - play of the seasons at Hanager Cinema at the Opera at 7:30 PM.

Tagore was an Indian poet, writer, painter and philosopher, and the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. He came to Egypt several times during his lifetime, and developed a strong friendship with Egyptian poet Ahmed Shawky, even writing an impassioned eulogy after the Egyptian poet's death.
