Egyptian Short Film Wins Big at Tripoli Online Film Festival

At the first edition of the Tripoli Online Film Festival in Lebanon, young Egyptian filmmaker Hayat AlJowaily has received the Audience Award for her short film ‘Maybe Next Time’.

At the first edition of the Tripoli Online Film Festival in Lebanon, young Egyptian filmmaker Hayat AlJowaily has received the Audience Award for her short film ‘Maybe Next Time’. Founded as a response to COVID-19, the festival took online votes between October 16th to October 23rd, with AlJowaily receiving a total of 482 votes.

Written, directed, and produced by AlJowaily, the six-minute film discusses prejudice when it comes to granting visas to citizens from developing countries, particularly those who hope to travel abroad to share their creative works in festivals, conferences, and other events. As AlJowaily herself was based abroad during her education at Columbia University in New York, and now again for work in Paris, this is a subject she is all too familiar with.

After studying the effects of cinema and how it influences economics, society and politics, the young filmmaker tackled the subject in her latest works to encourage cooperation between Arab and African filmmakers to allow young talents to have access to global markets.
