Netflix's regional 'Because She Created' campaign is coming to Egypt, and Sard - the writing hub founded by award-winning filmmaker Mariam Naoum - is helping them hold a five-day programme for women.

Global streaming platform Netflix is teaming up with Egypt’s own woman-led and woman-focused script writing hub, Sard, to introduce Netflix’s ‘Because She Created’ campaign into Egypt.

If you think you’ve never heard of Sard before, we promise that you have. Founded by award-winning writer Mariam Naoum, they’ve been instigating conversations across the country with hit series like ‘Leh La2’, ‘Khali Balak Min Zizi’ and ‘Mn Dahr Ragel’.

The ‘Because She Created’ has been working within the MENA region since its launch in 2021 to amplify Arab women creatives in the film industry, and their latest collaboration with Sard is giving aspiring female scriptwriters the chance to unleash their talent and learn from industry professionals.

Designed for 20 women residing outside Cairo in order to afford them greater access to creative opportunities, this five-day writing programme will take place in Cairo, where participants will partake in a series of intensive workshops. These classes will include storytelling sessions, talks given by professional writers, creative expression classes, and daily field trips to art events, cinemas, and theatres.

Sard and Netflix’s latest collaboration is a step toward tapping into Egypt’s undiscovered talents and bringing women from marginalised communities to the frontlines, allowing them to tell their stories.
