Photopia, Egypt’s leading photography school and hub for photographers, announced an open call for photojournalists and documentary photographers. In collaboration with VII Academy, an international nonprofit organization making visual journalism and photography education accessible worldwide and specifically in underrepresented communities, they are launching a twelve-week programme that will serve as a scholarship opportunity for Egyptians and Egyptian residents.

The programme will mostly take place online, and will be led by Iraqi photojournalist, Ali Arkady, who is part of VII Academy.

“We’re always trying to bring pioneers in the field to Egypt, and the programme is specifically designed for Egyptian emerging documentary photographers,” Marwa Abou Leila, co-founder of Photopia, tells CairoScene.

The level-one photojournalism programme will equip Egypt’s emerging documentary photographers with the tools and skills to narrate their own stories and eventually work as professional documentary photographers. Participants would eventually showcase their work at the upcoming edition of Cairo Photo Week.

The fully funded scholarship is reserved for ten students who will be chosen by both Photopia and VII Academy. The application deadline falls on September 4th, and the programme will be held from October 21st, 2022 until September 4th, 2023.
