16 Muslims React to the Orlando Shooting

Governments across the Arab and Muslim world have condemned the attack, but that's to be expected. The true measure of a people is what they have to say for themselves.

On Sunday June 12th, an armed Muslim American man by the name of Omar Mateen went on a shooting rampage in an Orlando gay nightclub killing 50 people and wounding 53, sending shockwaves through the world. The mass shooting is the deadliest in US history.

The outpouring of affectionate condolences and sternly-worded condemnations were soon to follow. Across the Muslim world where homosexuality is still considered a sin at worst and a mental affliction at best, the attack bears particular significance as governments rushed to denounce the act and the perpetrators - Mateen had placed a 911 call mid-shooting in which he pledged allegiance to terrorist group ISIS who later claimed responsibility for it.

The fact remains, however, that our conservative Muslim societies don't take too kindly to homosexuality and individual reactions to the attack are the best reflection of who we really are. From condemnation to conspiracy theories, here are just some of the reactions, across the spectrum, that we came across.
