Rumours that the USA will be cutting aid to Egypt have been circulating around Western news sources, followed by an ambiguous statement from the White House.
It looks like American military aid to Egypt is coming to an end. Rumours that the aid would be halted were flying around last night, and both CNN and the Washington Post reported that it would be cancelled.
This prompted White House National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden to quickly respond with “The reports that we are halting all military assistance to Egypt are false.” She added that there would be a future announcement about the assistance given to Egypt but that Obama will stick to his previous statement, made at the National General Assembly, “that the assistance relationship will continue.”
CNN immediately pulled a move from Egyptian State TV and reversed its statement, however, many major news sources are still debating on whether or not the relationship will change, particularly focusing on what Hayden meant when she said “all military assistance,” suggesting that some might be cancelled.
An official announcement is expected to be made in a couple days. The safe money bet is that Obama is waiting for the government shutdown to be lifted before dealing with foreign affairs.
