For International Women's Day, UK-based organisation, Teens in AI, is teaming up with Egypt’s Teenager Startups to host #GirlsInAI2021EGY Hackathon in Egypt. This hackathon is part of a global virtual event that aims to inspire girls and youth from underrepresented communities to become more involved in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Teams of four-to-six students, aged 12 to 18, will compete to design a product that uses AI to address an issue highlighted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Challenges. They will be expected to develop the product and create a presentation to argue for its use. Despite the seemingly demanding nature of the challenge, participants are not expected to have prior knowledge of AI. In fact, the purpose of the hackathon is to educate and serve as an entry into the field - as such, the Hackathon will offer a unique bootcamp led by industry experts to get young learners started on coding languages like Python. Participants will explore human-centred design, AI ethics and machine learning tools, while also partake in several workshops covering everything from pitching skills to business models.

While teams from around the world can participate virtually, the on-ground event will take place at Startup Haus in Downtown Cairo. The event will run from March 12th to March 19th. Interested parties can register here.
