In a move detrimental to animal rights in Egypt, the Alexandrian municipality shot scores of stray dogs at point blank.
Pictures and videos surfaced last night on Facebook of stray dogs being shot in the streets of Alexandria. According to Youm7 reports, the shootings were committed by municipality employees. The graphic footage shows the dogs being shot by rifles at point blank range and left to bleed to death on the sidewalk. The horrific campaign on stray dogs comes following the appointment of a new governor for Alexandria.
Not too long ago, a couple of men were sentenced for butchering a dog in the Cairo neighbourhood of Embaba; however, it is the government itself that now ordered such a brutal method of eradication. It is highly questionable if this move from the Alexandrian municipality will face any legal repercussions since no official statement was made as of now. What we can be sure of is this: if a uniform attitude is not applied towards animal cruelty and incidents thereof, we will never see Egypt on par with its international counterparts - not just with Europe or the USA, but even with neighbouring Arab countries who already adopt civilised ways to deal with stray animals.
