Tourism Minister Resigns

It is being reported online that Tourism Minister Hisham Zaazou has resigned in protest over the appointment of the ultra-conservative, Islamist Adel El-Khayat as governor of Luxor. Zaazou, a political independent was appointed tourism minister in August 2012.

Prime Minister Hisham Qandil asked Zaazou to continue at his post, however, hours after their meeting on Tuesday, Zaazou tendered his resignation.

The reason Zaazou is concerned is due to the fact that Adel El-Khayat is a member of Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya, an organisation whose members were, ironically enough, accused of killing at least 58 foreign tourists and four Egyptians in a terrorist attack in Luxor in 1997.

Luxor is one of the largest open-air museums in the world. This appointment won’t be bringing tourists back to Egypt. Bad move Morsi.
