If you’re wondering why the Ministry of Health started regulating c-section procedures, these statistics may show why…

The Ministry of Health and Population has recently announced plans to regulate ‘unnecessary’ cesarean births, and Minister of Health Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar has revealed the staggering numbers behind the ministry’s vision to reduce the procedure.

According to Dr. Abel Ghaffar, the average c-section birth rates worldwide, in comparison to natural births, are recorded from 25% to 30%. Meanwhile, the c-section birth rates in Egypt rocket up to 80%! The medicalization of birth in Egypt is attributed to a lack of awareness among mothers and doctors, in which scheduled cesarean births are assumed to be easier despite the health risks they pose. The procedure increases the risk of health complications, affects mothers’ health, and causes hormonal imbalance. On top of that, the procedure is often more expensive.

The statements come in light of future international regulations that will be imposed by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of the procedure, requiring doctors to state the reasons behind resorting to c-sections, especially since c-sections are overloading Egypt's public health sector, according to CAPMAS.
