Molnupiravir was approved by the FDA last December, and has been available for free in hospitals since January.
Molnupiravir, an antiviral pill designed to treat COVID-19 by American pharmaceutical company Merck, is now available at pharmacies across Egypt for EGP 420.
Egypt is the first country in the MENA region, and the fourth globally, to make the antiviral treatment available to patients. Molnupiravir was approved by the FDA last December, and has been available for free in hospitals since January, when it was used as an emergency treatment for high risk cases.
The release of the drug coincides with the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases, most of which are caused by the Omnicron variant. According to the Ministry of Health and Population, 99% of these cases required no hospitalization, with 90% presenting simple symptoms.
