Egypt Contracts Gilead For Antiviral COVID-19 Medicine

Egypt has recently contacted US company Gilead Sciences to order a supply of remdesivir, an antiviral medicine that is being evaluated for its capacity to treat COVID-19. Hala Zayed, the Minister of Health, has said that the World Health Organization confirmed that the first shipment of  remdesivir will be sent to Egypt. The medicine - which works by interfering with the virus's genetic material - has so far been limited for extremely serious cases of COVID-19, having only been made available in the European Union through clinical trials and 'compassionate use' programmes for emergency situations.
