Egypt's Favourite Organic Farmer Wins Prestigious International Cartier Award for Women

Sara-Kristina Hanning Nour, founder of Sara's Organic Food, has been making some serious waves in Egypt's farming world. The company's produce is preferred by some of Cairo's best culinary minds and receives high praise for its quality. But that's only one part of the story.

Nour's entrepreneurial spirit has just won her one of the world's most prestigious accolades for women, the Cartier Women's Initiative Awards. On Wednesday April 12th, in a fabulous awards ceremony held in Singapore, Nour officially became 2017's Middle East and North Africa Laureate of the award; joining the ranks of some pretty tremendous women from around the world.

The awards, which since their inception in 2006 have only recognised 58 Laureates, are aimed at encouraging inspirational female entrepreneurs worldwide to solve contemporary global challenges; those who make "concrete contributions" to solving these challenges and have the business acumen to back it up.

Nour started delivering the concept of farm-to-table goodness to Egyptian homes and businesses in 2014. Through Sara's Baskets and Lara's Baskets (adorably named after her daughter), we began to see a glimpse of Nour's entrepreneurial smarts. The produce is grown and sourced locally and ethically, delivery is timely, and even their baskets are reusable and hand-woven locally. It's no wonder 80% of their clients are repeat customers.

"Their stuff is great. It's noticeably more flavorful and of higher in quality than regular products. Their basket delivery option is also convenient and pretty cool in terms of getting stuff based on seasonality. They're good people to work with — accommodating and understanding," Procurement Manager of Ma7ali Salma Gharib says.

Back in 2015, we had the pleasure of visiting Nour and taking a stroll with her at Desert Lake Farms, out of which Sara's Organic Food Operates.
