Egypt Opens Middle East's Largest Metro Station In Heliopolis

Your daily commute may be a little easier now that the Heliopolis Metro Station has finally opened. The Transportation Ministry announced that starting today, Heliopolis is now the home for the largest metro station in the Middle East, boasting a full 10,000 square metres all around.

The huge Heliopolis Metro Station is packed with modern amenities including; automated machines that allow you to purchase a ticket directly (a small victory if you suffer from acute social anxiety), and a digital signage system to help passengers find their way around.

The station sits on the third line in the metro system, which is currently being built. The third line will eventually connect the Cairo International Airport and Al-Salam city. The route will also pass through neighbourhoods such as Mohandiseen, Agouza and Zamalek. Finally, Heliopolis commuters will no longer have to transfer through Attaba, hop on another line to the Opera Metro Station only to have to take a freaking taxi to get to Zamalek. Construction on this part of the metro system began in July 2015, and the completion of the project is set for 2022.

The new station is estimated to eliminate almost two million commutes above ground and save about LE 250 million in public transportation. The metro system currently helps over four million passengers make their way through Cairo every day.
