Egypt to Establish New Metro Lines in Three Governorates

In an effort to improve transportation and reduce traffic, Minister of Transportation, Kamel Al-Wazir, has announced plans to set up metro lines in three Egyptian governorates: Qalyubiya, Daqahlia and Assiut.

Assigning the designs for the second metro line’s extension to French company SYSTRA, Qalyubiya’s metro is set to have five stations, ‘Mit Nema’, 'Mit Helfa', 'Kom Eshfin', 'the Ring Road' and 'Qalyub Railway station'. The project is expected to cost around EGP 8 billion and is estimated to take one year to complete.

As for the governorate of Daqahhlia, the establishment of three metro lines is being discussed with the possibility of having one starting from Talkha city, passing through the Nile and ending at Sandub. Meanwhile, the second and third lines will be starting at the governorate's university; the second one will pass through the Suez Canal Street and end at Al-Dearsat Street and the third passing by the Nile and ending at Takhla city. 

For Assiut, which has seen a high demand for a metro line as the governorate is made up of over four million residents, the line is set to connect New Assiut to the Old city. A study has already been conducted for the establishment of a metro line, according to the Advisor of Assiut University’s president, and has concluded that line should be implemented over three phases, beginning with the Assiut railway station, passing through the Wasta bridge and ending in New Assiut.
