The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development is drawing up a plan to expand nationwide urban development in order to accommodate nearly 10 million people by 2022. The plan will focus on investments for urban development in Upper Egypt and governorates along the border of Egypt, while implementing environmental policies such as the rationing of energy and the reduction of carbon emissions. According to the ministry, the recent programme to remove informal settlements, and the preservation and maintenance of historical areas, have contributed to their overall objectives for urban development.
