Egypt to Host World University Championships for Handball & Squash

New Giza has been selected to host the 2024 University World Cup for Handball, in cooperation with the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU). Although a specific date had not been set yet, this is the second FISU event that New Giza is scheduled to host in the coming years, after it had secured the 2022 World University Squash Championships from June 27th to July 3rd. These also happen to be sports where Egypt traditionally excels, with past FISU champions Karim Darwish, Ramy Ashour and Raneem El Welily having advanced to the world number one ranking. Coincidence?

Earlier this year, Cairo hosted the 2021 Handball World Cup, the 2021 World Modern Pentathlon Championship and the African Continental Road Championship.

Egyptian university student athletes are climbing in the ranks across an array of sports, clinching top positions in a number of international sports tournaments. The Egyptian University Sports Federation is responsible for overseeing competitions for the university league, organizing more than 16 games during the academic year and over the summer with students also participating in international championships in tandem.
