Egyptian Government to Compensate Nubians Affected by Construction of Aswan Dam

The Egyptian Government has pledged to compensate Nubians impacted by the construction of the Aswan High Dam, said Governor of Aswan, Ahmed Ibrahim.

Established 1902, the dam was built to generate power and regulate the seasonal flooding of the Nile. However, in the process of increasing the rate of water flow behind the dam, it caused the flooding of much of lower Nubia, causing many to find new homes across Egypt and Sudan.

On Sunday, Ibrahim announced that the committee will receive requests from those affected between June 25th and July 16th, for residential, agricultural and financial compensation. According to Ibrahim, the number of affected Nubians beneficiaries totals at 11,716. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Omar Marwan, has stated that each of those affected are entitled to apply for a cash compensation of EGP 25,000 per feddan.
