The CairoScene team goes to lunch at Favorito, a fancy new gourmet restaurant and grocery store in New Cairo.
The CairoScene team was invited for lunch at Favorito in New Cairo. Upon arriving we were very confused as the entrance leads into a supermarket, albeit it a wonderfully-stocked gourmet one, complete with freshly baked bread and just about anything you are looking for conveniently vacuum sealed to stay fresh.
After perusing around the grocery store, checking out the quality products we were informed that the restaurant was upstairs. Phew. Upon entering the restaurant we were taken back by how simple and clean it all was. The room was small but comforting with the bright white walls and tables with purple highlights to warm things up.
As we sat down, we were collectively drooling as the intoxicating smell of the bakery below filled the restaurant with glutinous anticipation. The meal began with, thankfully, an assortment of wonderfully fresh breads. The bread alone was worth trip, and then the appetisers came out. The beef carpaccio was good, although it seemed a little heavy on pepper. The squid carpaccio was definitely a highlight of the meal, as the balance between acid and heat danced around on our taste buds.
The salad was also wonderful, depending on how you feel about blue cheese as it was a strong, mature type, but was balanced out by the candied walnuts. For the entree we were offered three choices; Duck, Chicken, Salmon. Those who had the duck were very pleased as it was so well cooked, the meat fell of right off the bone. The salmon looked the nicest as it was serve with a bright fresh salsa on top, while the chicken was a little disappointing. Soaked in sauce, the breading on the fillet was a little soggy and had a taste of flour. This was the only the hiccup in what was otherwise an amazing meal.
Many of us were so happy with the service and quality of food, that after the meal, we bought plenty from the grocery store below. Favorito is a great restaurant, but an even better gourmet grocery store. Simply put, New Cairo just got alot more tastier.
