The Ministry of Environment has started a long roster of projects aiming to revitalize the lake and bring it back to what it once was. So far, 800 km of water canals and drains were cleared, and lining and rehabilitation of 103.32 km of canals were completed, increasing the levels of clean water in the area.
Eleven environmental sanitation plans have been put into action in the surrounding factories that spill into the lake. At the same time, the Egyptian Minerals and Salts Company is establishing a factory along the lake. There is also a plan to construct five sewage plants and four water treatment plants, financed by a European loan.
Projects under the auspices of the Haya Karima initiative and the National Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation are also being implemented in nearby villages.
