Ghada Wali Sentenced to Six Months in Prison for Metro Murals Case

Egypt's Economic Court sentenced divisive graphic designer, Ghada Wali, to six months in prison along with an EGP10,000 fine, as well as a temporary compensation of EGP 100,000 for intellectual property infringement and theft of Russian artist Georgy Korasov's paintings.

These paintings were initially displayed as murals at the 'Koleyet El Banat' station on Line Three of the Cairo Metro in July 2022. Following accusations by Russian artist Georgy Korasov on X (formerly, Twitter) regarding the unauthorised use of his paintings, Mobility Cairo shared a video of the murals being removed from the station.

Since then, The National Tunnels Authority and RATP Dev Mobility Cairo issued apologies, emphasising their respect for intellectual property rights both in Egypt and abroad. Wali denied the accusations, claiming that a French company had conducted a tender, invited their participation and accepted their proposal.
