Giza Zoo Will Go Cageless After Major Renovation

The Giza Zoo - the most famous zoo in Egypt, and the first modern zoo to be built in Africa - will undergo a major transformation over the next 18 months, turning into an open-range facility with no cages. After renovations, both the zoo and its animals will be properly guarded with designated visiting trails. In order to implement these changes, the zoo will shut down for a year starting January 2023.

The nearby Orman Garden will also undergo a renovation, receiving a gondola lift that will connect it directly with the Giza Zoo. The botanical garden and the zoo are historically linked, since they were both built by Khedive Ismail and inaugurated at the same time, and soon it will be literally linked as well.

The National Military Production Company and the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation have an established usufruct which will lead the renovations.
