Hot Potatoes

With gourmet burgers and cute cupcakes having become staples in every Cairene’s diet, it seems like budding restaureurs are conspiring against us to make us all fat.

The latest kitsch culinary concept to hit the Cairo food scene is no different. A carb-lovers dream come true, L’Auride in the Fifth Settlement goes back to basic pleasures by serving up hot potatoes. Yes, hot potatoes. Hot sweet potatoes, too.

The brainchild of young entrepreneurs Mostafa Ragai and Mohammed Fayez, L’Auride began last Eid as a pop-up stand at Ein Bay, giving hungry vacationers a steaming hot hit of the humble potato on the beach. And boy was it a hit – “People started coming back every day of their holiday to try new toppings and different combinations,” says Ragai. And why wouldn’t they? With everything from peas and peppers to sausage and shrimp and all kinds of cheese, it’s no surprise that people couldn’t get enough.

Now having set up shop inside another shop (the potato stand is inside Turkish restaurant Arazi), L’Auride’s hot potatoes are selling like, well… hot potatoes. “We chose the Fifth Settlement as it’s filled businesses and corporate offices, as well, of course, as all the universities,” says Ragai. They’ve even expanded into serving up freshly baked sweet potatoes too, stuffing them with all sorts of gooey goodness, from our favourite chocolates to sticky-sweet syrups.

The best part is that the hearty portions are super affordable, with your basic potato (with butter, salt, pepper, mozzarella, one topping of your choice and one dressing of your choice) coming in at just 20LE.
