Kasr Al-Aini’s Stroke Ward Given World Stroke Organization Award

Mohamed Othman El Khasht, President of Cairo University, has announced that the stroke unit at Kasr Al-Aini Teaching Hospital has been awarded the Diamond Angels Award from the World Stroke Organization, in cooperation with the European Stroke Organization. The award is largely considered the highest evaluation of stroke units’ performance globally, and Kasr Al-Aini is the only unit in the Middle East and North Africa region to have received it. While this is the first time the Cairo hospital has won this award on the global level,  it has previously received it in 2017 when compared only to units within the regions of Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The stroke ward at Kasr Al-Aini is the largest unit in the entire MENA region, and operates based on the European treatment protocol, which utilizes the golden hour principle and is comprised of 16 ICU beds, 16 regular hospital beds, and 4 beds for thrombosis. The hospital hosts around 13,000 stroke patients annually, performing clot melting for around 200 patients and brain catheterization for around 25 patients.
